Seasonal Christmas story

‘Once upon a Christmas’

So here begins a tale. Star crossed lovers ? From the moment, he laid eyes on her, he knew. Love. In all it's simplicity, it's diversity, it's elegance but no! Her voice. Carried across the hall, how could he not fall in love with her? A fan? He was sending her roses... begging to meet her?

Of course she had fans.. her dressing room was never empty of flowers ! But how DID they end up together?

The music halls, were a beginning, on her road to fame. The grand finale, the Mayfair London with the Ambrose Orchestra singing 'In the still of the night.... " Plus a whole new repertoire, sealing her success. A star.

As for her besotted admirer? He became a drunk. Down on his luck, out of work, vagrant? Not quite, but almost. Still besotted with her, never accepting anyone could equal her. On his lips her songs, in his head her vocals..

One night, amidst the dense fog, the cold night air; leaving her lodgings Lilly desperately searched for a cab.

There were, none close by, so, she decided to make her way through an alley way that would lead her, to a busier thoroughfare, where there would be Hanson cabs available for hire.

Halfway through the alley, being careful to pick her way around the debris. A drunk lurched at her. A rogue by all accounts, a right villain.

From his pouch he drew a blade to slash at her. Throw her back against the wall demanding, menacing. Thomas Lamb had been slumped against the wall, feet from them. He had been in a drunken stupor but was now roused from it, by the commotion?

Launching himself at the attacker, he struck him down. Rescued her? The shock realization, of who she was, sobered him up, enough for him to to take her to the end of the alley, help her secure a cab and leave her.

NOT before he had told her, of his love for her, to which she replied. "Clean yourself up Thomas Lamb and we might meet up again as friends, if nothing else.
I owe you my life."

It would take a while but yes, that was exactly what he did. So how come, this terrible curse upon him, to walk the earth? I know you're curious arn't you to know?

Well after SHE had left him, he had returned to the alley. Frustrated by his life, angered by having had her within feet of him and lost her again, unsure if he could ever remain sober?

He had sought him out, found him attacking another poor soul. Unknown to him and Lilly, her attacker, had killed 6, Thomas had indeed saved her life!

Striking the murderer down, he yelled at the next victim, to get out of there, whereupon he, repeatedly hammered his fists into the murderer; in fury, all his rage.

The murderers broken, beaten lifeless body. Whether the villain of the piece deserved his fate, Thomas Lamb had handed the grim reaper his prize and probably hell it's next resident, guilty of murder.

That did not wipe the slate clean re his crime as far as any heavenly body might be concerned. Thomas Lamb, went on in life, to do wonderful charitable things.
Totally different from that night.

A person of respect, who was loved, by those close to him; by her. Though it should be made clear, they did not marry, they became inseparable. Right up to the very end.

Yet at the moment she could have left him, risen to that place we oft refer to as that heavenly plane, she chose not to, instead to plead on his behalf?

If judgment made its decision, it was that HE, with her, to bear witness; must do one more good deed without profiting from it, until such time, both as spirits, left to haunt the living.

BUT what deed, would ever set him free, would see them together, finally at peace?
