Seasonal Christmas story

‘Once upon a Christmas’

Terry, ah poor Terry was, much to Mia's delight; being trashed at bowling. He was in big trouble. As for that Wii character. They were in hysterics!

Sandy had tried to contain her laughter at seeing his redesigned moniker, but could no longer. Must have been the ‘lets go to San Francisco, flowers in your hair that had done it! Long haired hippy!

He had tried to recover his composure at having lost to her, by showing her some of the bowling team pics and then the trophies his father had kept?

"You wait missy, until I get you into a proper bowling alley. I’ll have my revenge!" An hour later, Mia had gone to bed, admitting she was worn out! Hot chocolate with some marshmallows floating on the top, duly spooned, eaten and drank she had left them.

They were sat sipping on wine, playing a game of Scrabble. The log fire with flames flickering, the soft light of the room. The thin wisp of smoke. She had not felt so relaxed and at ease.

It was, almost as though they had known each other for ever. Opening up to him, just as he was to her. Their hopes, their dreams, mixed emotions.

The ex? The sod who made her life hell. She wanted to talk about him, to stop the sense of feeling trapped by him, still not completely free?

"His father owns an insurance business. He had always flashed the cash around. Never short of money. Gambled or drank it away. Until his father, had had enough!

Shaun had been told to find his money elsewhere. Why he started stealing and selling things. Most of mine until finally, I threw him out, when I discovered he had sold some of Mia's things but worse still some of her fathers.

No matter how I wished, I prayed; he’d not come back? He would turn up at 1am in the morning, banging on the door, shouting, cussing. Sometimes if I willed myself NOT to let him in he’d simply smash the door in. Or as on ocassion, a window at the back of the house for him to climb in.

Then he would blame me for the window being broken or the door needing repairs. Beating on me and taking things to pawn or sell elsewhere claiming it was to get money to pay for repairs.

Finally when he smashed up a gift from an Uncle of Mia’s; a keyboard. I lost it.
I just cracked. I called the police AGAIN for them to come out and arrest him, take him away. A restraining order?

A joke. He’d ignore it, beat me up and rip out the telephone wires or hide my mobile so I couldn’t call the police, a prisoner in my own home. How I would pray for him to leave. You feel like an elastic band being stretched, stretched, stretched until..

The turning point came when he demanded the keys to the car, saying that I didn’t deserve to have that whilst he was paying out monies for food and repairs.
I refused and he beat me down, it was Mia who saved me. Minutes later he stormed out and that was when I made my mind up.

You know, that wanting to get away, never mind where, just anywhere except there. To find somewhere that he could not find us. To try and lose that constant sense of dread; of fear.”

She moved closer to him, he could feel her shaking. "I don't know how, the hell I'm going to fetch the rest of the things, we do have, IF we still have them! I locked everything up, but he has been known to break in before now."

Terry outlined a plan that he knew could work. "Get him distracted. Pinned down elsewhere, even lock the son of a bitch up somewhere. My mate Tony, has an HGV licence so can drive a four ton, load it up, clear the place."

"I'll take anything that's going, to get away from him and save Mia from anymore misery! Her being here, this had been so good. She's been so much, like the Mia, I used to know. So much happier. She went to let go of his hand, placed her letters onto the board. "No way." He howls. "A seven!"

"Not my fault. Don't forget my additional 50 points. I hope we're not going to be a sore loser!" "Laugh, while you can ! He glanced at his letters then laid them out on the board! He was grinning, she noted how smug he looked as she glanced down at the word he had put down.

"Thank you for your seven letters, it gave me the opportunity, to put my seven letter word out!" He was laughing, ripples of laughter, as she stared at the board and then at him.

“That’s on a triple as well! Son of a!“ That did it, he was holding his sides, from laughing so much. There was a hiss from her. "For that, you, will pay."

She was mimicking one of the characters from a horror movie. It made him laugh even more. "I saw that ! You'll need to practice your.."

He didn't finish! She was on him, on top of him, holding him down. Pinned down! Still laughing, or trying to. "Not so funny now is it." He moved flipping her over and under him.

"That's cheating." Her voice soft, hissing at him. Eyes on eyes? Her beautiful eyes. Soft lips. Begging. Her hands moved, pulled against his head, dragging it down, as their lips met. He stopped pinning her down. Taking in the sensation of his lips on hers.. Lost in the moment.

It had been so long, since he had ever remembered this feeling. The sensation. of warmth and not just from the fire. “Can you, let me up for air!“

She sat up, ran her hands through her hair, turned to look at him. Leaned in for another kiss. Then pulled away.

Reaching for the bottle of wine, she poured them both some, shifting closer to him to hiss. “Cmon loser."

Making a move towards the Scrabble board, sipping at her wine, she put the glass down, rearranged her letters and put them onto the board, passed the bag to him.

An hour later she had beaten him!
“Not fair not fair at all! I not only have Mia kicking my butt, but her mother as well.“ “Well you can console yourself, I only beat you by twenty points.“

He sat on the sofa as she moved to sit next to him, lean against him, her feet up on the footstool. Looking at the fire.

“I love the way the flames dance. When I was a child, I used to watch the embers in the fire at home. The way the flame flickers.
I would try and make out images in amongst the coals.”

“It did cross my mind, as to what you wanted to do about Mia and schooling?“ “Home schooling For a couple of months, I think I could do that with her. I would need the internet.”

“I spoke to BT earlier. Connected within the next twenty four hours. The internet won’t be until 28th December. Earliest date.“ “That’s fine! She can manage without, until then.

Mia does like to keep in contact with her friends. Don’t worry they all know about him, NO one would tell him, where I am. Mia has learned NOT to tell her friends exactly where she is when she has been away with me.

Not the first time I've taken off. Mostly to my brothers. Gave that up, after he discovered where he lived, followed me and had to be taken away by the police.
My brother was OK about the damage but I wasn't, at having put him and his family at risk."

Outside their window a strange howling.
She sat up looked around. “Foxes!“
The noise became several noises, baying! Seconds later it died away.

“We’re in the wilds you see. No one for miles around, a natural habitat for foxes, isolated; another reason, we will need to get your car fixed.

Terry went to move. Stood up as she sat up. “I am going to make a nightcap? I thought I would have an Ovaltine. There is of course, Horlicks, chocolate in various flavor sachets.“

She stood up grabbed his arm. “Lead the way!“ Picking up the glasses and other items. He stopped her. “That can be done in the morning.“ Twenty minutes had passed, drinks consumed, Sandy was in the bathroom cleaning her teeth and flossing. He could hear her yawning. He would not be far behind her.

Overall, on reflection, the day had been another surprising day in so many ways! Even if they had broken down barriers and were very close, he was not pushing nor expecting anything.

Sandy was in his parents room. He peered round the door to say goodnight, she was fast asleep! He gently closed the door, headed to his room.

Sometimes what life throws at you can sure be a real mix, this time, the storm had cleared, to leave a rainbow in its wake. A multi-colored vista of delight.
If she was more relaxed, at ease; for the first time in a long time, he felt contented.

Day 19 continues here
