Jess Corbin’s

Seasonal Christmas story

‘Once upon a Christmas’

Settling back into his chair, having finished talking to Nina. Terry was resigned to having an hour of sweet repose. IF he could relax that was.

Across from him, something buzzed. Walking over to the sofa he could see the mobile phone, doing some crazy dance. Grabbing at it, he picked it up and answered it.

“Who’s this?“ It was a male. He was about to answer, when it dawned on him, that it might be, the psycho at the other end! Relieved to hear the male talking instead.

Well for some minutes, before abruptly ending the call. Probably his favorite curse, running out of power. Still, on this occasion he was glad whoever it was, had. It might be a good idea to turn the phone off.

“Got you!“ The male looked at the computer screen, ran his fingers across the keyboard and waited. Seconds later a map appeared on the screen in front of him. Three cell towers to one and almost pin point accuracy as to where that phone had ended up?

Taking a pen, he scribbled the details onto a scrap of paper, tucked it into his pocket and checking the windows to the cubicle that he was in, were clear of prying eyes, cleared down his history details. If he had been caught, he would have faced disciplinary action and probably fired!

Terry had headed off to bed, would not wake until ten in the morning. Glancing at the alarm clock, he yawned. Stretched. That was a good sleep. The walk the day before must have done him some good.

He turned, pulled an extra pillow towards him, slid it under his head and rested.
Slowly he began to remember the previous day! Sitting up he let out a howl.
Oh my.."

The first place was the restroom followed by a wash, clean his teeth and then? Investigate to see what had transpired re? Five minutes later he had closed the doors on them both. Still soundly asleep! Not surprising really. Both of them had been to the point, well her mother certainly was; of exhaustion.

Remembering the climbing trip in the mountains, had made him so tired, he slept for almost twenty four hours after. Breakfast, ah well a bacon sandwich, a brew and he was happy. Might see if he could find those light bulbs for the shed?

He decided instead, to do some cooking. A warming vegetable broth. His friend Claire, the doctor, had told him. Keep yourself active but at the same time, eat healthy!

At this time of the year, soups and light HOT meals, with some exercise, nothing too strenuous! Bowling was about the only real activity he indulged in. The rest of the time, was work, spending less and less time with Nina, these days, out with her friends; or at home!

An hour later, the broth was gently simmering away in a slow cooker.
Unknown to him, Mia had woken and taken a trip to find the bathroom.
Fresh towels had been left out. In the shower and ten minutes later, she felt refreshed, clean and invigorated.

Dressing, she stopped; listened. For the first time in a long time, a smile coming to her lips. Peace and quiet! No rows, no screaming, no violence, not happening anytime soon either! She picked up some of Nina's perfume on the side unit.
Smelt nice. Lightly sprayed herself.

Reality? A look of panic on her face. Her mother, where was her mother?
The last time she had seen her, she was on the sofa.

Running down the stairs, taking care not to slip, she made her way into the lounge.
Ah the sofa! That had been tidied up, the cushions replaced and plumped up; no sign of her mother!

Terry walked in from the kitchen, to see her looking worried. "C'mon. Follow me.” They headed upstairs. Easing open the door they peered around it to see, her mother Still sleeping! Almost 4pm in the afternoon. They were both thinking the same thing!

They tried to rouse her, without, success; well at first! She stirred, sat up and looked around. Took a few seconds to bring everything into focus. Saw Mia. Went to give her a hug.

“How do you feel?” The strangers voice. Some alarm at it being a male?
“It’s OK Mama, he rescued us. You crashed the car.“
