Narya was pleased. They had followed her instructions, she had no complaints. ‘I have’ she murmured to herself, a good team. Now all we need to do, is secure that hut. There were no arguments, just general talking as they started towards the rocky grassy peaks, in the distance. 11 miles to go.
Suddenly, Soniette stopped. “This navigation aid is lying.“ Narya took it off her looked at it then stared around her “You’re right. Its inaccurate.“ “Tampered with? If we allowed IT to guide us, we would soon be well off our target.“ “The others stared at them. “Well that’s a good start. Now what are we to do?” Soniette took the unit back, she seemed to be ignoring all the moans and groans. “OK everyone, take out your coms units.“
They took them out. “The grid references on the unit are correct, the detail isn’t, but we can ignore the details. We know the grid references for the hut and our position?“ They murmured, some nodding. “If we use the coms units, set them to the different com sats, we can triangulate our position so we’re spot on as to where we are.” Some smiled, others looked confused. Narya took a stick drew three lines. “Where all three converge is where we are. Signal origin, intersect 1, 2, 3 and extend like so?“
Akarnaje adjusted his coms unit. “Once we know, where we are; we can manually pre program the route, to ensure we don’t go off course. We’re here. the hut is there and the unit has an inbuilt error I reckon of ten degrees per miz, that would mean we would have ended up here.”
"That’s NINETEEN miles.” Aisha growls. “I can just about manage five or six, let alone NINETEEN.“ She stared at them. “I still don’t understand why it would be faulty?” Narya smiled “Its not. It’s deliberate to see if we are AWARE not just of our position, but the accuracy of the equipment. How to cope if the equipment is mis calibrated or needs resettng.“ Kinsey interrupted. “Well they’re not conning us. “Narya and the others now smiled. “You’re right about that Kinsey.“
“OK fifteen of us, five of us set to sat 1, five to sat 2 and the others to sat 3. Soniette walked past them tapped them on the shoulders sat 1 sat 1 sat 1 and so on until she now programmed her coms unit as the core comparator. “Alright. On the coms units, the small indent pad, is a link up transmitter, when I say, push down on it to activate it. We need to get all of them activated within seconds of each other so Soniette can receive the info on the nav unit?” she looked at Soniette “ready?”
Soniette nodded, “Everyone. 1, 2, 3 activate NOW.“ Seconds later Soniette squealed GOT IT. Perfect, spot on.“ She waited then moved her fingers over the unit to show Narya “Yesss. OK you take the lead Soni.“ “We’ve had to waste valuable time.‘ “No. If we hadn’t taken time to get the course correct, then we could have been well off course, if not lost. How much time would we have lost then in comparison?" Lumark was usually the quiet one. This was one of the odd occasions, he ventured an opinion, stirrring himself, to do so.
"A lot to be said, for preparation. In this instance, better late than never I suppose.” Soniette glared at him, wondering if he was being rude. Kinsey interrupted. “All good in thought. The deed, may require more than that to put into practice.“ Soniette smiled. Kinsey knew Lumark, all too well. Lumark had a hard time getting off his recline first thing in the morning let alone making any real effort at anything. Not that he was stupid. Lazy maybe, but very intelligent.
His belief in life was for him to do the thinking and others to do the work. Some Kets became irritated at his ‘laid back’ approach, others who knew him, like Kinsey, understood his brains and his ability, to think as one might coin the phrase; ‘Outside of the box’. “There are a lot of factors to be taken into consideration, not just the distance but the terrain, the obstacles including the threats such as the realform creations but also’ he paused. “Naturally occurring.
